September 2010

♦ Body, Soul & Gershwin performance: Thursday, September 9, 2010
7:30 pm
Wortham Theater Center

Set to Maurice Ravel's Concerto for Piano in G major, Stanton Welch's Tu Tu is a large ensemble classical work featuring 22 dancers in a humorous, sexy romp. Inspired by a painting by Norwegian expressionist painter Edvard Munch and English composer Benjamin Britten's Sinfonia da Requiem with its images of the sea engulfing the land, Jiří Kylián's Forgotten Land suggests the rising waves of a grey sea, the ebb and flow of life, and themes of metamorphosis central to human existence. A lavish, crowd-pleasing blockbuster inspired by the movie musicals of Hollywood's golden age, Mr. Welch's The Core is a highly theatrical depiction of the Big Apple, incorporating archetypal New York characters with plenty of Broadway flash and dazzle.

Wine reception in the Green Room during the second intermission.

Post-performance: enjoy a complimentary drink at Minuti Coffee (909 Texas Street, Ste. C). Minuti is within walking distance of Wortham Theater Center so leave your cars at the Wortham for the short 4 block walk.

♦ Jewels performance: Thursday, September 23, 2010
7:30 pm
Wortham Theater Center

A ballet in three parts, George Balanchine's Jewels was premiered by New York City Ballet in 1967 and was hailed as the first plotless full-length ballet. The gems in Jewels pay tribute to three golden ages of dance and also to the beauty of the ballerinas Balanchine adored. Poetic and flowing, Emeralds evokes France, the birthplace of Romantic dance. Rubies mirrors the carefree spontaneity of America, a throwback to the musical comedies and films Balanchine created soon after he arrived in America. Diamonds evokes the grandeur and precision of the Imperial Ballet of St. Petersburg with each shimmering wave of classical elegance.

Wine reception in the Green Room during the second intermission.

Post-performance: enjoy a complimentary glass of wine at Branchwater Tavern (510 Shepherd).

♦ Marie performance: Thursday, February 24, 2011
7:30 pm
Wortham Theater Center

Villain or victim? Haughty queen or impetuous girl?  In his full-length Marie, artistic director Stanton Welch offers a new perspective on the often controversial and always fascinating life of Marie Antoinette. Choreographed specifically for Houston Ballet, Marie makes tremendous use of the company's acting abilities and dancing talent. Stylized sets by Kandis Cook and a sumptuous score by the Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich add depth to this absorbing tale of pomp and circumstance.

Wine reception in the Green Room during the second intermission.

June 2011

♦ The Taming of the Shrew performance: Thursday, June 9, 2011
7:30 pm

Featuring lavish scenery and costumes, John Cranko's staging of The Taming of the Shrew is a masterful choreographic depiction of Shakespeare's perpetually battling lovers, Petruchio and Katherina, and of Petruchio's determination to bend the feisty, independent-spirited and tempestuous Katherina to his will. Incorporating a stunning array of dramatic moods, virtuoso dancing and vivid characterization, The Taming of the Shrew conveys like no other ballet Shakespeare's wit, brilliant comic invention, and sharp understanding of human character.

Wine reception in the Green Room during the second intermission.

Post-performance: enjoy a complimentary glass of wine at Block 7 Wine Company (720 Shepherd).
