Houston Ballet's Tina Bohnstedt


Tina Bohnstedt, Ballet Master

Ms. Bohnstedt began her dance training at the Heinz-Bosl Stiftung Ballet Academy in Munich, Germany in 1981, and received her diploma in 1989. During this time, she was awarded the Junior Gold Medal at the German Ballet Competition (1986), as well as finalist fourth place in the Moscow International Ballet Competition (1989). From 1989 to 1998 Ms. Bohnstedt was a principal dancer with the Bavarian State Ballet, Munich, Germany.

In 1992 her artistry was recognized with the Bavarian Cultural Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Arts. She performed a wide range of classical and contemporary roles, including Juliet in John Cranko's Romeo and Juliet, Kitri in Ray Barra's Don Quixote, Aurora in Peter Wright's Sleeping Beauty, Mary in John Neumeier's Nutcracker, among others. She also performed several lead roles by Balanchine including Serenade, Symphony in C and Apollo along with works by Van Manen, Kylian, Naharin, Preliojai and many others.

Ms. Bohnstedt has toured internationally to China, Italy, Korea, Philippines, Poland, Belarus, Spain, Switzerland and the United States.
After moving to San Francisco in September of 1998 Ms.Bohnstedt became a guest dancer with the Lawrence Pech Dance Company in San Francisco, she then joined the Diablo Ballet in September of 1999 and has since then been featured in many works of Diablo Ballet and guest choreographers like ( KT Nelson,Val Caniparoli,Julia Adam and Viktor Kabaniaev) which have been created for her.

Since 2007 Ms.Bohnstedt has also been serving as a Ballet mistress for the company. During her occupation with Diablo Ballet she is a guest artist and guest teacher for several company's in the San Francisco Bay Area.

In 2007 Ms. Bohnstedt choreographed her first piece for Diablo Ballet (The Mirrow) in 2008 (Hopers Ball) and in 2009 (A Path of delight or…..) in 2010 (Just Another Day) in 2011 (My Way) including choreographing several solos for YAGP and Orlando World Competition.

In May of 2011 she choreographed a piece in memory of the late Lena Horne named (A Contribution to Lena Horne).

Since October of 1999 Ms.Bohnstedt began teaching and has since then been a teacher for many ballet schools and ballet companies including (Smuin Ballet Company, Houston Ballet and Houston Ballet's Academy, Contra Costa Ballet, Berkeley Ballet, City Ballet SF, Space Coast Ballet Academy, Nothern California Dance Conservatory, Metropolitan Ballet Academy) and others.

In 2005 Ms.Bohnstedt became Director of the Diablo Ballet Apprentice Program. In January of 2011 she became faculty of City Ballet San Francisco and in September 2011 she assumed the position of Ballet Master at Houston Ballet.
