Age Guidelines for Children

Age Guidelines for Children

Houston Ballet welcomes children and families to our performances. We want to encourage children to experience the magic of classical ballet and fall in love with the art form.
It is difficult to say what exact age is right to attend ballet performances. In our experience presenting ballet over the last thirty years, we have observed that some of our more mature repertory programs can be challenging for younger children. We have created the guidelines below based on these experiences. Parents should also use their discretion based on the maturity level of their children

For questions about appropriateness of content of a specific ballet for children, please call our box office at 713.227.2787 Monday - Friday 9am - 5 pm.

sitting quietly and happily through a two-hour performance

For our more family-friendly story ballets, we recommend that children be at least two years of age and capable of sitting happily and quietly through a two-hour performance to attend a production.

other options for children who become restless at a performance

Sometimes, even children who are older than five years may not be mature enough to sit quietly through an entire performance. If a child of any age is too talkative, fidgety or in any way disrupts other audience members, our usher staff has been trained to ask the parent to take the child out into the lobby out of respect for others attending the performance. (This is similar to what happens in many churches if a child begins to cry during the service: Parents take children to the back of the church until they can calm down.)

At this point, our ushering staff will direct parent and child to an area in the lobby of the theater where they may watch the performance on closed-circuit television together until the child is able to calm down. Parent and child are then welcome to re-take their seats at the next intermission.

If your child can sit quietly through the performance and does not disrupt the enjoyment of others, you and your child will be welcome at Houston Ballet performances.
