Inspiration, determination, diplomatic struggles and color-blind casting: the story of Houston Ballet is a fascinating tale. Join us for an encore screening of Houston Ballet: Breaking Boundaries, a documentary chronicling the history of the company over five decades that premiered to sold-out theaters in November as part of the Houston Cinema Arts Festival.

Featuring interviews with star dancers Debbie Allen, Carlos Acosta, Li Cunxin and Janie Parker, and four of Houston Ballet's five artistic directors, the film traces the rise of Houston Ballet from the dream of a few influential Houstonians to a company of international acclaim.

The director of the documentary is John Carrithers of Carrithers Studio, a Houston-based filmmaker who served as director of photography on several recent feature documentary projects, including Mothers At War, a film about women combat veterans; 38 Pieces, a documentary about the Byzantine Frescoes rescued by Dominique de Menil, directed by Susan and Francois de Menil; and Relocation Arkansas, a chronicle of Japanese Americans growing up in an internment camp in Arkansas during World War II.
